As you may know, there’s a day for almost everything you can imagine. In just the first week of January you’ll find National Bloody Mary Day, National Cream Puff Day, National Drinking Straw Day, National Trivia Day, and so many more.
This coming Friday, February 9th, is National Bagel and Lox Day and I think it’s important to note it and celebrate in our Jewish communities. While bagels and lox may not actually be part of our religion, it is part of Jewish culture and for many American Jews, Jewish culture is how they connect to being part of Am Yisrael. We should not devalue or dismiss the importance of culturally Jewish touch points, nor are they necessarily an avenue to more religious practice. They are, in and of themselves, a celebration of a person’s Judaism and we need to embrace every person and practice that positively connects to Judaism. So perhaps consider highlighting and honoring National Bagel & Lox Day in your community.
