Each year around this time I make the menu plans for our Rosh Hashanah celebrations and it's always important to me to include some of the simanim (signs/symbols). The most well known simanim are apples and honey for a sweet new year, but there are a lot of others too.
Many of them are plays on word where the word for that food indicates goodness, long life, blessing, etc.
Here's the current draft of what I'm planning:
Challah, apples and honey to start for all the meals
Erev
Arnowitz Style Chicken Soup
Brisket with carrots & potatoes
Roasted Broccoli & Cauliflower
Roasted Leeks* Recipe w/Herbs de Provence https://www.inspiredtaste.net/134/roasted-leeks-with-herbs-du-provence/
*Leeks are a Siman. The hebrew is similar to the word for "cut" and you're hoping bad intentions towards you will be cut off.
Honey Cookies
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Day 1
Chicken with Sundried Tomatoes
Beef Stroganoff
Egg Noodles
Spinach & apples with raisins
Honey Roasted Carrots* https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a58381/honey-glazed-carrots-recipe/
*Carrots are a Siman. the Yiddish words for "carrots" and "more"—mern and mer, are similar. So among Yiddish speakers, carrots symbolize the hope for increased blessing
Green salad
French Chocolate Torte (Gluten Free)
Grandma Shirley’s Apple Cake
Day 2
Chicken Soup & matza balls/kreplach
Sheet Pan Chicken Tzimmes https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/tzimmes-chicken-with-apricots-prunes-and-carrots
Swedish Meatballs https://thejewishkitchen.com/swedish-meatballs/
Seven* Vegetable Cous Cous https://riceselect.com/recipe/roasted-seven-vegetable-couscous
*Since 7 is a lucky number, eating a dish made with 7 vegetables is considered good luck, so this is a popular RH dish for Jews from North Africa
Roasted Green Beans
Hearts of Palm, Avocado, Edamame Salad
Old Fashioned Oatmeal – honey cake https://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/old-fashioned-oatmeal-honey-apple-cake
Sunken Apple Torte
