This weekend we come to the end of the high holiday season. On Shabbat this week we will read the Torah reading for Shemini Atzeret that talks about tithing, loan forgiveness, the 3 pilgrimage festivals, and the sacrifices for Shemini Atzeret. Then as Shabbat ends we roll into Simchat Torah
and this week our Friday night dinner is actually inspired by Simchat Torah. It's all about rolling. See what I did there?!?!
This week's menu has a variety of rolled foods to remind us of the rolling and unrolling of the Torah scroll - how this holiday celebrates that we get to the end and just re-roll the scroll back to the beginning and start again. I love that we still read from a scroll - parchment with quill-written letters. I love the tradition we do in our shul on Simchat Torah when we stand in a circle and unroll the whole Torah for everyone to see its length and "take a tour."
So, this week for Shabbat dinner we will have the following rolled items:
Potato cigars with sautéed mushroom topping
Trader Joe's Chili & Lime Flavored Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips (aka kosher takis) - if you haven't tried these, they are a bit addictive
Make your own burritos (you have to do the rolling!)
Pulled Chicken
Sautéed Beef
Veggies (peppers, onion, zucchini)
Chocolate Swiss Roll Cake (I'm buying this one...sometimes you take the easy road)
